Louisiana children get linked school identification

Louisiana's Department of Education must develop a statewide identification system, with initial implementation by August 1, 2027. It must assign early childhood numbers to every child in publicly funded prekindergarten at a school or early learning center. For programs without public funding, the Department may assign numbers if a parent or guardian agrees to provide needed information. Neither early childhood nor school numbers can include or be based on Social Security numbers. Children keep their numbers throughout Louisiana early childhood programs and public elementary and secondary school. Local school boards must assign school numbers unless students already have numbers from an early childhood program. By December 31, 2027, boards must link early childhood and school numbers to support research on early childhood programs.
