Out-of-state drivers face impoundment without insurance proof

Louisiana’s liability insurance proof and enforcement rules now cover out-of-state vehicles driven on its public highways. If you cannot show the required proof when asked, your vehicle must be impounded. You receive a noncompliance notice that also explains your administrative hearing rights; it can arrive by first-class mail. Copies must reach the towing or storage operator and Office of Motor Vehicles within three calendar days after service. For Louisiana-registered vehicles, officers must remove the plate and give it to their agency chief or designee. If the vehicle is not impounded, the notice must be attached to the plate. Both must reach the nearest motor vehicle office within three calendar days after service.
