Calcasieu municipalities gain backup hospital assessment authority

The law gives qualifying municipalities backup authority if Calcasieu Parish has not authorized a hospital assessment by June 1, 2026. A municipality within the parish with more than 60,000 people can then authorize the assessment. Only institutional healthcare providers inside its boundaries can be charged. The municipality and its governing body must follow the same program rules as a parish. This expands a healthcare funding option but does not guarantee an assessment or a direct household payment or benefit. The act takes effect upon signature, expiration of the time to become law without signature, or the day after a veto override.
