More pay counts toward state police pensions

Beginning June 30, 2026, Louisiana state police pension calculations count legislative pay above amounts set by the State Police Commission. This applies to special calculations for members entering the Deferred Retirement Option Plan with less than 25 years of service. It also applies to the 12-month salary average for members employed before September 8, 1978. The 36-month rule covers members employed on or after that date whose first state-system membership began by December 31, 2010. For members under the 60-month compensation rule, raises above 15% are exempt from the pension calculation's 15% limit when caused solely by legislative pay adjustments or uniform systemwide raises adopted by the Commission and approved by the governor.

Unused leave boosts state police pension service

Beginning June 30, 2026, eligible unused annual and sick leave adds service credit to Louisiana state police pensions. Each eight hours earns one work day; half-day fractions or more round up, and smaller fractions are dropped. The leave must be earned under State Police Commission or administrative rules. Credit applies at retirement, or death before retirement while still a member with a spouse or dependent entitled to benefits. Leave cannot establish retirement eligibility; it adds service only after the member otherwise qualifies.

Unclassified state police service faces pension limits

Beginning June 30, 2026, Louisiana State Police Retirement System members are classified employees under the State Police Commission. The Department of Public Safety and Corrections secretary and deputy secretary remain unclassified. The law continues to bar pension credit for unclassified Office of State Police service after July 27, 1966. Service as secretary or deputy secretary is the exception and can count toward retirement.
