Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana’s transportation department must inspect state highway bridges and other bridges covered by state law. Covered bridges include overpasses, culverts, related structures, and their structural, load-bearing, safety, and operating parts. The department must operate, maintain, repair, restore, preserve, and replace bridges it owns. It must oversee work to improve safety, address deterioration, extend bridge life, and handle emergency repairs. These duties exclude bridges owned or operated by other state agencies, local governments, special districts, toll authorities, or the federal government, unless another law provides otherwise. By October 1, 2026, the department must report on bridge conditions to both legislative transportation committees at a joint public meeting. The report must include the bridge count, each bridge’s condition, type, parish, maintenance funding sources, and National Bridge Inventory rating standards. Beginning January 1, 2027, the department must present proposed preservation plans for all bridges it maintains twice each year. These presentations go to both committees at a joint meeting; the law sets no funding amount or required spending level.
