Licensed workers gain legal cost protection

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana licensing boards cannot collect certain attorney fees and costs from licensees who win disciplinary cases. This protection covers only board costs incurred after the licensee makes a written offer of judgment—a formal settlement offer. A licensee wins if the case ends without an adverse finding or the final penalties meet the law’s comparison tests. Suspension or probation must be no longer than offered, and fines must be no higher. If suspension was offered, a final outcome without suspension also qualifies, even if it includes probation or a fine. For combined suspension and probation, one suspension day equals 15 probation days; the combined penalty cannot exceed the offer. This protection also covers boards exempt from disciplinary time limits and overrides agency rules or practices that provide less protection.
