New emergency access rules for Louisiana schools

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana public school authorities or their vendors must share building information when preparing school crisis plans. This includes current blueprints, digital school maps, and ways to enter locked areas, including any exterior key box location. Recipients include local law enforcement, state and local public safety and emergency preparedness offices, and school crisis response offices. The Louisiana Center for Safe Schools also receives this information and coordinates map sharing with state education agencies. Schools without a responder access system before January 1, 2028, must install at least one exterior key box per campus. Each box must hold keys or cards for all campus doors and printed school maps. School authorities and local police choose locations for quick entry; boxes must meet the UL Standard 1037 anti-theft standard. Installation uses money lawmakers set aside for the Louisiana Center for Safe Schools; the law sets no dollar amount. Blueprints and school mapping data are exempt from public records disclosure, limiting public access to these records.
