Interest cap for injury claims against Louisiana

Beginning August 1, 2026, the law changes interest on personal injury and wrongful-death claims against Louisiana or its local governments. Before judgment, legal interest equals the lower of 6% per year or the judicial-interest rate under R.S. 13:4202. Interest starts when service is requested after the formal court demand and runs until the trial judge signs the judgment. After signing, legal interest uses the rate under R.S. 9:3500, while judicial interest uses the rate under R.S. 13:4202.
