3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning August 1, 2025, a district tax ballot proposal triggers a related ballot requirement in Lafourche Parish. The Parish Council must put a proposal to reduce an existing property tax rate on the same election date. The proposed reduction cannot exceed the district's proposed tax increase. This gives voters a tax-reduction choice but does not guarantee approval or a full offset. The district also has legal authority to levy taxes, issue bonds, and take on debt.
Beginning August 1, 2025, existing district court costs extend to Lafourche Parish. Adult felony and misdemeanor cases, including traffic offenses, can carry costs up to $5. These apply after conviction at trial, a guilty or no-contest plea, or bond forfeiture. Juveniles found to have committed traffic violations can face costs up to $5. Juveniles found delinquent can face costs up to $25. Courts can suspend all or part of juvenile costs and direct that adult costs come from fines. Collections fund the juvenile justice commission's operations; adult court collections must be sent monthly.
Beginning August 1, 2025, Lafourche joins the River Parishes Juvenile Justice District, which covers juvenile facilities and rehabilitation across Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, and St. John the Baptist. Its 14 commissioners must be registered voters living and legally domiciled in the district, serve four-year terms, and receive Senate confirmation. The Twenty-Third Judicial District's sheriffs jointly appoint three members; the Lafourche, St. Charles, and St. John the Baptist sheriffs each appoint one. District attorneys and chief judges in the Seventeenth, Twenty-Third, Twenty-Ninth, and Fortieth Judicial Districts each appoint one member. Commission employees, including its superintendent or administrator, work directly for the commission, and the board can no longer contract for facility management, administration, or operations.
