Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Louisiana adults gain pharmacy ivermectin access

Louisiana pharmacists may dispense ivermectin to adults age 18 or older under a standing order. A healthcare professional with prescribing authority in the Louisiana Department of Health must issue that order. The department must set dispensing rules that require giving patients a screening risk assessment tool. Patients must also receive information about when ivermectin is appropriate or unsafe, proper use, and medical follow-up. The department may ban dispensing products containing ingredients it finds harmful.

Pharmacists gain legal protections for ivermectin

Pharmacists dispensing under this law receive legal protections when they act in good faith and use reasonable care. They are protected from discipline or other adverse administrative action by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. They also receive civil immunity, except for gross negligence or willful misconduct.

Ivermectin patients may face extra costs

Pharmacies may charge an administrative fee for services under the standing-order dispensing rules. This is added to ivermectin's ingredient cost and dispensing fee, and the law sets no administrative fee amount. The law does not require health insurers to cover ivermectin obtained this way. Patients whose plans do not cover it may have to pay themselves.
