Pension protection for existing part-time municipal retirees

Beginning August 1, 2026, the law protects retirement checks for a specific group of Louisiana municipal retirees. Retirees must have been serving as part-time reemployed retirees under Act 634 of 2024 before July 1, 2026. They can continue that service without a reduction in retirement benefits. This protection lasts only while their part-time service remains continuous.

Pension cuts for returning Louisiana municipal retirees

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana Municipal Employees’ Retirement System retirees face tighter rules when returning to covered part-time work. These rules apply to retirees receiving normal retirement benefits whose jobs do not meet the system’s definition of an employee. The law removes the exception for retirees age 60 or older with more than 30 years of creditable service. The monthly earnings limit equals monthly average final pay used to calculate retirement benefits minus the monthly retirement benefit. Benefits stay unreduced at or below that limit; earnings above it reduce the monthly benefit dollar for dollar. Pay from part-time elected service listed in R.S. 11:164 does not count. Retirees in this work are not system members.
