Mandatory jail time for repeat sex buyers

Beginning August 1, 2026, a second conviction for buying commercial sexual activity in Louisiana requires six months to two years in prison. At least six months must be served without probation, parole, or a suspended sentence. Courts may also impose a $1,500 to $2,000 fine. Half of collected fines go through the existing distribution system.

Sex-offender registration rules reach repeat sex buyers

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana's sex-offense definition includes second-offense purchases of commercial sexual activity for registration and related requirements. Convictions count, as do cases where the court defers or withholds its ruling. The definition covers offenses on or after June 18, 1992. Earlier offenses count if the person is in state corrections custody on or after that date. Equivalent convictions from other states or military, territorial, foreign, tribal, or federal courts also count. Foreign or tribal convictions lacking fairness and due-process safeguards under federal guidelines are excluded.
