New numbering rules for Louisiana boaters

Beginning August 1, 2026, motorboats, houseboats, and sailboats without federal documentation must be numbered to operate on Louisiana waters. They must have a valid certificate of number and display the number on both sides of the bow. Numbers can come from Louisiana, applicable federal law, or another state's federally approved system. Limiting this requirement to undocumented boats reduces the numbering burden for federally documented boats. Motorboats with valid federal or approved other-state numbers are exempt while in Louisiana for no more than 90 consecutive days. Other exemptions cover foreign motorboats temporarily using Louisiana waters, U.S., state, and local government vessels, and ships' lifeboats.
