The law takes effect August 1, 2026, with heart prescreening required in student athletes’ physicals beginning in the 2026–2027 school year. Qualified health professionals must follow evidence-based guidelines recommended by the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, or other nationally recognized heart-care organizations. Positive findings require referral for further evaluation and testing; the law does not say who pays for follow-up care. Parents or guardians of students in school sports must receive science-based information about causes of sudden cardiac arrest in children. These materials are provided as part of the required physical exam and athletic permission form process.
