Optional Louisiana titles for boats and motors

Beginning August 1, 2026, people who buy or possess boats or outboard motors mainly used on Louisiana waters can request titles. For items not subject to required titling, owners can apply at any time using forms the department provides. This option excludes inventory held for sale or lease. Boats with a valid U.S. Coast Guard certificate of documentation cannot receive a Louisiana title.

Required Louisiana titles for boats and motors

The law takes effect August 1, 2026, with required titling starting January 1, 2027. Boats worth more than $5,000 must have titles if they must be numbered; outboard motors need titles when bought or transferred on or after January 1, 2027. These rules cover items mainly used on Louisiana waters, but not inventory held for sale or lease. Owners must apply on department forms within 60 days after acquisition or a change in title information. Boats with a valid U.S. Coast Guard certificate of documentation cannot receive a Louisiana title.
