Louisiana Medicaid covers ambulance care without transport

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana Medicaid covers ambulance assessment or treatment after a 911 call without transporting the patient. This new coverage applies to Medicaid beneficiaries and excludes air ambulances. Care must follow medical direction and established protocols, and emergency medical workers must stay within their allowed practice. Real-time phone or video support from a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant is allowed but not required for payment. Medicaid pays providers its basic life support emergency base rate or advanced life support Level 1 emergency base rate. The rate depends on the response level and services provided. The Louisiana Department of Health must issue rules to carry out the law.
