Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana registrars can leave some precinct polling places unopened. One exception applies when fewer than 20 voters are eligible in the precinct’s voting district for any office or proposition. The location must also serve another precinct where the remaining eligible voters can vote under the law’s shared-location rules. Registrars can also leave a polling place unopened after early voting closes if all eligible precinct voters have already voted. Those votes must have been cast by absentee mail or during early voting.
