Beginning July 1, 2026, registrars, chief deputies, and confidential assistants at Step 1 or higher receive January merit reviews. An “excellent” rating moves an employee up one pay step until Step 10. After more than 12 months at Step 10, an “excellent” rating qualifies the employee for a 5% salary increase. Each employee can receive no more than five of these annual increases. The Secretary of State or a designee reviews registrars with input from the Registrar of Voters Association. Registrars can appeal to the State Board of Election Supervisors; members involved in the review cannot hear the appeal. Chief deputies and confidential assistants also have review and appeal procedures.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Louisiana sets new annual pay schedules with 10 steps for parish election staff. The population bands are 0–50,000, 50,001–200,000, and 200,001–1,000,000. In that order, registrar pay ranges are $69,597–$90,351, $83,217–$108,122, and $90,026–$117,007. Chief deputy ranges are $44,060–$57,032, $57,681–$74,803, and $64,491–$83,688. Confidential assistant ranges are $37,251–$48,147, $50,871–$65,918, and $57,681–$74,803. Pay depends on the employee’s role, population band, and step; these ranges do not show each employee’s raise. Population figures come from the latest federal census, Census Bureau population estimates, or lawful parish determinations. Parish governing authorities retain control over local application of the scales. The estimated increase in state general fund spending is $496,168.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Louisiana’s Department of State can change registrar pay for population changes only once each decade. The adjustment occurs one year after the state receives the federal census. This rule limits population-based changes, not merit raises. It can delay a population-based pay increase or decrease.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the law changes Louisiana Senate Districts 33, 34, and 35; the Senate still has 39 members. District 33 includes all of Union and West Carroll, plus parts of Bienville, Lincoln, Morehouse, Ouachita, and Webster. District 34 includes all of East Carroll, Madison, and Tensas, plus parts of Concordia, Morehouse, Ouachita, and Richland. District 35 includes parts of Grant, Jackson, Lincoln, Ouachita, Rapides, and Winn. Exact precinct lists determine each district’s boundaries. The new lines apply to later elections and appointments, without shortening current officeholders’ terms. The maps use January 27, 2026 precinct files based on 2020 Census maps and parish updates through that date. General precinct labels include geographic and nongeographic subdivisions. Later parish precinct changes do not change district boundaries unless a law changes them. The redistricting does not directly change household taxes, benefits, or costs.
