Child death reports and immunization record access

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana requires more information in autopsy reports for children under 9 who die unexpectedly without explanation. Required reports must document immunizations given within 90 days before death. Coroners and their autopsy contractors can access the child's state immunization registry records without written consent. Including these records does not imply a cause of death. Coroners must report cases they identify as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, or Sudden Death in the Young. Louisiana's health department must send these cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health's Sudden Unexpected Death in Infants and Sudden Death in the Young Case Registry. The law also allows registry information to be obtained or provided without the client's written consent by specified groups. These include the health department, public health units and their agents, coroners, autopsy contractors, parents or guardians, schools, and early learning centers. Immunization records used under these registry rules are not treated as privileged communications between a health care provider and patient.
