Louisiana adds privately funded Ten Commandments monument

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana must arrange for a Ten Commandments monument on the State Capitol grounds among existing monuments. The commissioner of administration chooses the site and proposal, considering the design and the sponsor's ability to pay. Selection is due December 31, 2026; if none qualifies, the commissioner must select the first acceptable proposal received afterward. The monument cannot exceed 6 feet high, 4 feet wide, and 4 feet deep, including its base. It must use the required Ten Commandments text and include a plaque explaining its historical and legal context. Covered public displays may also include the Mayflower Compact and related religious documents tied to legal history, with required context materials. Private sponsors must cover all monument design, construction, placement, and maintenance costs, at no cost to the state. The commissioner must assign private maintenance for covered outdoor displays, keeping them structurally sound, readable, and respectful in appearance. Before removal for poor upkeep, the commissioner must give written notice and a reasonable chance to fix the problem. Removal is allowed only if repairs are not made on time and no replacement private maintainer can be found.
