Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Social workers get more certification flexibility

Certified social workers who provided community psychiatric support and treatment can request a certification extension before their certificate expires. They no longer need to apply at least 60 days ahead. They must meet master's-level social worker licensing qualifications, except the requirement in R.S. 37:2707(A)(3). The extension covers only community psychiatric support and treatment services. Workers whose three-year certifications expired in calendar year 2025 can use this process but must renew immediately before requesting an extension.

Students gain school care with limits

Louisiana's Office of Public Health must develop policies protecting access to care at public school health centers. School-hour care requires a parent or guardian's request and a healthcare provider's finding that care during school hours is necessary. Schools cannot block on-site evaluations, assessments, or authorized treatment plans that establish medical need or deliver medically necessary care. Licensed healthcare providers, acting within their license limits, decide on student evaluations and treatment—not school employees without healthcare licenses. Schools cannot require another background check for providers with proof of a passed Louisiana State Police check. Those providers must also hold the proper license, certification, or registration and be in good standing with their board. School health centers cannot provide abortion counseling or distribute contraceptives. These school health provisions apply only to the extent public or private funds are available.
