Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana law creates the “Louisiana Youth Apprentice” designation for qualifying apprentices age 24 or younger. They must be at least 16, unless another law sets a higher minimum age. A written registered apprenticeship agreement must provide at least 375 hours of reasonably continuous paid work and approved related instruction. Training must lead to a high school diploma or equivalent, plus an advanced industry credential, technical studies certificate, or equivalent or higher credential. Apprentices must also meet the general apprenticeship requirements and state training standards. The general framework keeps time-based programs of at least 2,000 work hours, competency-based programs, and programs combining both approaches. Written agreements are with employers, employer associations, or employee organizations. The youth designation provides no separate payment.
