New school-zone road markings for Louisiana drivers

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana authorities must paint “SCHOOL” across the entrance lane of school zones using automated speed enforcement. The white lettering must be sized to fit the lane beside the S1-1 school sign. It must follow the current Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Roads without asphalt or concrete are exempt, as are roads the appropriate state agency finds unsuitable. On roads outside the state highway system, markings installed before August 1, 2026, remain acceptable if they met prior rules. Those markings remain acceptable until the road is resurfaced or the markings are replaced. The law also repeals the former separate pavement-marking provision.
