New deepfake protections for Louisiana school children

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana law bans harmful deepfake use against students in kindergarten through grade 12. The ban applies to students, teachers, administrators, and other employees at elementary and secondary schools. It covers use intended to coerce, harass, or intimidate a student, or to maliciously share or sell the material. Deepfakes are electronic audio or images created or changed to falsely seem authentic, or to replace someone's likeness with another's. Political, public-interest, and newsworthy works are excluded, including commentary, criticism, satire, and parody. Material is also excluded when its content, context, or a disclosure visible throughout makes clear it depicts no real event. The State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education must develop and adopt implementation rules with the Department of Education.
