Local police can hire vehicle enforcement helpers

Beginning August 1, 2026, qualifying Louisiana local law enforcement agencies can hire licensed private providers for vehicle enforcement support. This applies only to municipalities incorporated after October 1, 2019, and ends July 31, 2028. A commissioned officer must first start the enforcement action, and providers must follow the agency’s documented directions. Providers can process plates and paperwork, check registration and insurance through state-approved systems, and send notices already issued by officers. They can also coordinate towing or storage at an officer’s direction and maintain records. Providers have no police powers. After lawful enforcement begins, drivers can voluntarily consent to surrender their license plate and let a provider handle it. Consent must be recorded in writing or electronically and kept under enforcement recordkeeping rules. It cannot replace an officer’s lawful authority or actions.
