New office return limits and judge exceptions

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana bars elected officials who retire, resign, or are removed from returning to that same office. They cannot be appointed to it or qualify to run for it. Judgeships are exempt from the separate vacancy restrictions in subsection A of the existing law. The Louisiana Supreme Court keeps its constitutional power to appoint a sitting or retired judge to any court.
