Louisiana patients get medical debt interest limits

The law caps interest on debt for medically necessary care at 3% per year. Contract terms charging more are void. A licensed provider must find the care necessary to prevent, diagnose, or treat illness, injury, disease, or symptoms. The care must meet accepted standards. Medical debt includes bills for healthcare, medical products and devices, prescription drugs, and transportation to care. Credit-card debt and credit from federally insured financial institutions, their subsidiaries, or affiliates are excluded. Louisiana's attorney general can enforce these protections and seek civil penalties, including against collectors that buy medical debt. The attorney general must create a complaint process for affected consumers or any member of the public to report violations. Complaints are public records, but the complainant's name, address, and other identifying details must be kept private and removed. Filing a complaint does not guarantee money back.
