Rehired retirees keep pensions but pay contributions

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana State Employees’ Retirement System retirees can take qualifying full-time Corrections Services shortage jobs. They must have been retired at least one year; disability retirees are excluded. This exception also lets early-incentive retirees return without the usual two-year wait, but the one-year minimum still applies. Jobs must follow civil service advertising rules and draw too few suitable applicants. The department secretary must certify the need in writing before posting and annually certify continued need for the job or rehire. The secretary also decides whether candidates meet the institution’s needs. Retirees choosing the new Option 4 cannot reverse that choice. They receive job pay and their full pension, but earn no added retirement service credit or benefits. Both retirees and the department must make required retirement contributions. When reemployment ends, retirees get their contributions back without interest; the department’s contributions stay in the retirement system.

State employers cover retirement law costs

Beginning August 1, 2026, any costs of this law must be covered through additional employer retirement contributions. Those contributions must follow Louisiana’s constitutional pension-funding rules. The law sets no contribution amount or rate.
