Louisiana deer hunters gain air-powered weapon option

Beginning August 1, 2026, licensed hunters can use pre-charged air-powered devices during Louisiana’s primitive firearm deer season. Projectiles must be at least .30 caliber. They must weigh at least 150 grains and leave the muzzle at 800 feet per second or faster. Alternatively, another weight-and-speed combination must produce at least 215 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. Hunters must hold a license under R.S. 56:3002 and use still hunting. The law also allows breech-loading rifles of at least .35 caliber and magnified scopes on any authorized weapon. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission can establish the season and must set rules for weapons, licenses, and deer sex. It also sets the season’s areas within places where deer hunting is allowed.
