New boat registration path and transfer fee

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana changes registration rules for motorboats, houseboats, and sailboats. When ownership changes, the new owner must apply and pay $5 plus the standard registration fee. The new registration certificate and decal are valid for three years. Boat possessors can also apply when a registration certificate has lapsed for at least five years. They must have possessed the boat for at least one year immediately before applying. They must send the application to the last certificate holder by certified mail, return receipt requested. Applicants must submit an affidavit confirming that notice and evidence of the required possession period to the commission. They must also include copies of the notice and return receipt, using documentation in the commission's required form. This application path does not guarantee approval.
