New Louisiana commission supports fathers

Beginning August 1, 2026, the law creates Louisiana’s Commission on Fatherhood Engagement within the governor’s office. It brings together state agencies, lawmakers, courts, and community members, with representation from all nine public health regions. The commission must carry out state fatherhood recommendations, raise public awareness, and coordinate programs across agencies. Its duties include improving parenting and co-parenting skills, employment services for low-income fathers, and family ties for incarcerated or recently released fathers. It must address housing barriers for fathers with minor children and improve support for fathers around childbirth. It also works to improve fair opportunities for fathers in custody and visitation cases. The commission must improve data collection, report outcomes annually, and hold a statewide fatherhood summit at least every four years. Its annual legislative report must include a funding request and recommended funding allocations for community organizations. The law provides no funding amount, direct household payments, or changes to taxes or benefit eligibility. The commission ends January 1, 2030.
