No-cost cancer screenings for Louisiana firefighters

Beginning August 1, 2026, the law requires cancer and precancer screenings for covered Louisiana firefighters and fire service employees. Coverage includes full-time, paid classified firefighters employed by municipal or parish fire departments or fire protection districts. It also includes fire service employees of nonprofit corporations under contract with a fire protection district. A physician or qualified healthcare provider performs the screenings. The first cancer screening occurs no earlier than three years after employment starts. Later cancer screenings occur every five years at ages 20–39, every four years at ages 40–49, and every three years at ages 50 and older. Precancer screenings occur at 10 years of employment and every 10 years afterward. Cancer screenings cover colon, lung, bladder, oral, thyroid, skin, blood, breast, cervical, testicular, and prostate cancers. Beginning January 1, 2027, esophageal precancer screenings are available under the law's schedule and end at age 60. Retirees receive cancer and precancer screenings from their former employer under the same schedule. Employers or former employers pay all costs, with no copayments, deductibles, coinsurance, or other out-of-pocket expenses. Taking part is optional. The law removes the former explicit exclusion for employees who resign or are terminated. Private health insurers are not required to pay for screenings more frequent than the latest American Cancer Society or National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommendations.
