Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana district and parish courts can seek Parochial Employees' Retirement System coverage for their employees. Courts must submit a plan, and the system's board must review and rule on it under board regulations. Approved plans can cover all employees and services or only selected groups and services. Selected groups can get coverage even when other court-funded positions must belong to other public retirement systems. Coverage depends on board approval and whether the plan includes your position.
Beginning August 1, 2026, eligible Louisiana court employees have until January 1, 2027, to choose Parochial Employees' Retirement System membership or stay in their prior public system. The choice cannot be undone. To join, you must have been hired before your court added coverage and belong to another public system for that job. You cannot have retired from that system or participated in its Deferred Retirement Option Plan. You also cannot have previously made a binding choice to stay in the Louisiana State Employees' Retirement System for that job. The Parochial system must provide election forms. Timely joiners get the same rights as other members to transfer service credits or have service recognized across systems. Credits transferred into the Parochial system cannot later be transferred back through a reverse transfer.
