Career coaches help students plan for graduation

Beginning August 1, 2026, career coaches can help Louisiana public middle and high school students and families develop graduation plans. Plans must begin by the end of eighth grade and be reviewed by the end of tenth grade. Each plan uses the student's academic record, talents, and interests to choose a high school path matching their future goals. The graduation plan or special education plan must list recommended courses for earning a standard diploma. The law also covers students with an exceptionality, but this extension excludes students identified only as gifted or talented. After review, the student, parent or legal guardian, and either a counselor or career coach must sign the plan. Before changes, a counselor or coach must meet with the parent or guardian, in person or online. They must explain effects on graduation requirements and future education goals, and the parent or guardian must approve changes in writing. The state education board must develop guidance that districts may use, and the education department must provide training opportunities for counselors and coaches.

School boards must plan career coaching

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana public school boards must explain how they will provide career coaching to each student. This description must be part of each board's student progress plan. Boards can use school counselors or career coaches and form regional groups to share coach contracting costs. By January 1, 2027, the education department must post a list of high-quality career coaching providers; schools may use it. Each year, the department must also list boards that spent 95% or less of their prior-year career development fund appropriations. These rules do not set a funding amount or require one delivery model.
