St. George takes over insurance taxes

Effective January 1, 2027, St. George alone sets, collects, manages, and enforces local insurance premium taxes within city limits. These taxes are charged to insurers based on premiums for risks located there. Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, and their consolidated government cannot impose, collect, manage, or receive these taxes. Insurers face only one local insurance premium tax per risk and period; the law sets no tax rate or amount. St. George and the parish can agree on records transfers, closing old records, and administrative cooperation—not continued parish collection. The changes apply only to premiums for periods beginning on or after January 1, 2027.
