School drone pilot requires map-sharing safeguards

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana's education department may start a drone-response pilot to supplement existing school emergency plans. All city, parish, and other local public schools are eligible under criteria set by the state education board. When operating the pilot, the department must select 1 to 4 schools, first come, first served. The department may choose a vendor to run the pilot and provide drone technology. Participating schools must share school mapping data with that vendor, subject to existing school-map protections. The vendor must sign a strict confidentiality agreement with the department, the school, and the Louisiana Center for Safe Schools. The vendor must coordinate drone-response training with the department, Louisiana State Police, and Louisiana Sheriffs' Association. This coordination must support a unified emergency response, prevent conflicting actions, and follow applicable law-enforcement training procedures. The department may accept grants or private funding to start or run the pilot; no funding amount is specified. Starting December 31, 2027, it must report findings and effectiveness each year to the Senate and House education committees.
