Police can request outside vehicle insurance checks

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana’s commissioner may authorize outside vendors or designated agents to check license plates for law enforcement. Checks must use the state insurance verification system and happen at law enforcement’s request. They can only verify compliance with required vehicle liability insurance. Violations by local governments or law enforcement agencies that requested and received authorization count as malfeasance, or official misconduct. Those violations may also be grounds for civil claims under the Louisiana Governmental Claims Act.
