More High School Planning Help for Families

Beginning August 1, 2026, graduation plans must list core courses through tenth grade and first-year high school courses by eighth grade’s end. The student’s individualized education program serves this role when applicable. Students who do not meet ninth-grade promotion standards must have remedial courses included. Charter schools ending at eighth grade must give students and parents written information about graduation plans, diploma types, and required courses. These students must complete their plan’s high school course list upon enrollment, no later than October 1 of ninth grade. The charter school may partner with the student’s planned high school to help provide the graduation plan or individualized education program.

Parents Get More Graduation Planning Rights

Beginning August 1, 2026, Louisiana charter schools must follow graduation-plan rules for public schools serving the same grades, subject to approved-charter terms. Schools must review plans yearly and update course lists as needed until all required core courses are completed. Before changes, counselors must meet with parents in person or virtually to explain effects on graduation and goals after high school. Parents must approve changes in writing; students, parents, and counselors must sign each revised plan. Plans must allow changes while keeping students on track for graduation or individualized education requirements and college or work. Parents of students entering eleventh grade can request a graduation-plan or individualized education program update; updates are not automatic. Each student must be offered available vocational training opportunities, with help from parents and counselors; no particular program is guaranteed. Schools must use existing staff, counselors, and other available resources to carry out these rules.
