Clearer seat belt rules for drivers

Beginning August 1, 2026, covered drivers must keep their seat belt properly fastened across the lap and shoulder as designed. They cannot place it behind their body or under their arm while the vehicle moves forward. Covered vehicles include passenger cars, vans, sport utility vehicles, and pickups with a gross weight rating of 26,000 pounds or less. Vehicles made before January 1, 1981, remain exempt.
