New Fallen Heroes plates carry extra fees

Beginning August 1, 2026, the law establishes an optional “Fallen Heroes” license plate for Louisiana citizens. Eligible vehicles include passenger cars, pickup trucks, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, and vans. The plate becomes available only after at least 1,000 people apply and the state updates its registration system. Each plate costs $25 annually, plus a $3.50 handling fee and the standard vehicle license tax. The Capital Area Law Enforcement Foundation receives the annual fees to buy bulletproof vests for Louisiana peace officers; the state keeps the handling fees for administrative costs.
