Criminal penalties for false reports to police

Beginning January 1, 2026, it is a misdemeanor to knowingly give police false information to make them think someone committed a crime. It is also a misdemeanor to report an offense or a danger, like an explosive, when you know it is not real or you know you have no information. Knowingly making a false or baseless claim that an officer broke department rules while on duty is a misdemeanor. Knowingly making a false or baseless claim that an officer committed a crime while on duty is a class A misdemeanor. These rules deter false reports and protect public safety and investigations.
