Utilities must offer net metering options

Electric distribution utilities must offer alternative net metering tariffs approved by the Public Utilities Commission. Eligible customer-generators can enroll in these approved tariffs. The law does not set payment rates; it uses the commission’s rules and orders.

Longer net metering for cities and towns

For group projects that serve only cities or towns, eligibility lasts the longer of 20 years from the first year of payment, or until January 1, 2040. If the commission creates a new net metering tariff and the project elects it, eligibility for that tariff runs 20 years from the first year compensation was received under either tariff. Projects on an Order 26,029 tariff may switch to a new tariff but cannot switch back. When eligibility under Order 26,029 ends, projects may move to the tariff then available.
