More pension protection for returning teachers

Beginning October 1, 2025, New Jersey teachers generally have 10 years after leaving service to preserve their teacher pension membership. The window extends to 15 years for laid-off members and those leaving voluntarily after at least 10 continuous service years. Members must not have withdrawn their contributions, and federal minimum retirement distribution rules still apply. Members returning within their allowed window can enroll in the same pension tier they held before leaving. This also covers members who returned before October 1, 2025, within their allowed window. No extra member or employer contributions are required under this enrollment rule.
