Beginning June 3, 2024, more full-time paid New Jersey public firefighters have a right to cancer screenings without out-of-pocket costs. Their employer must participate in the State Health Benefits Program, and they must qualify for other coverage and waive that program's coverage. Physician screenings begin at least three years after employment starts and repeat every three years during employment. They cover colon, lung, bladder, oral, thyroid, skin, blood, breast, cervical, testicular, and prostate cancers. The State reimburses employers up to $1,250 per firefighter per three-year period after Treasury accepts proof that a physician performed the examination. This cap limits employer reimbursement, not the firefighter's benefit, and employers must keep records to support reimbursement.
