New Jersey creates social media research center

The law creates a Social Media Research Center at a four-year public college or university in New Jersey. The Secretary of Higher Education selects the school with the Health Department’s Office of Youth Online Mental Health Safety and Awareness. The center studies social media’s effects on residents and ways to reduce harm. It makes health policy recommendations to lawmakers, the Governor, and other key groups, with a focus on children and teens. Its research includes addictive social media use among minors and whether warning labels and disclaimers reduce those behaviors. New Jersey schools get free online courses and training on safe social media use. The law sets no required funding amount; support comes through annual state budgets and other public or private funds.
