New vehicle dealers face facility rules

Beginning July 30, 2026, New Jersey applicants for new vehicle dealer licenses must have a permanent in-state business building. It must contain at least 1,000 square feet, mainly for servicing or displaying vehicles. Applicants must also provide equipment needed to service vehicles under state law and rules. Service space can be attached to the business, elsewhere on the same property, or at an off-site facility. Off-site facilities must be in New Jersey, within the relevant market area, used only for vehicle servicing, and follow state off-site facility law.

Temporary licenses help new vehicle dealers

Beginning July 30, 2026, New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission must issue temporary new vehicle dealer licenses for substantially complete applications. Only signed franchise and lease agreements, required closing letters, the inspection report, and permanent signs may remain outstanding. Applicants must show control of the site and certify that missing items are ordered and being obtained. A signed lease can be submitted after closing. Licenses last 90 days, with one discretionary extension of up to 90 more days and no extra issuance fee.
