Fewer prescription visits for qualifying patients

Beginning July 8, 2026, qualifying New Jersey patients can get Schedule II prescriptions without the required in-person exam or review. Eligible patients include those in active cancer treatment, licensed hospice care, palliative care, or long-term care facilities. The exception also covers evaluation, consultation, or treatment related to P.L.2019, chapter 59. It also covers medicines prescribed to treat a substance use disorder. Providers must use live, two-way audio and video.

Remote stimulant prescriptions for kids

Beginning July 8, 2026, New Jersey allows patients under 18 to get Schedule II stimulants without an in-person exam or review. The provider must first get written consent from the child's parent or guardian to waive those visits. Treatment must use live, two-way audio and video.

Patients need video for controlled prescriptions

Beginning July 8, 2026, remote Schedule II prescriptions in New Jersey require live, two-way audio and video during treatment. Audio-only calls do not meet this requirement. The technology's use must follow state and federal law and applicable care standards.

Remote stimulant starts require adult follow-ups

Beginning July 8, 2026, New Jersey adults can have their first exam for a Schedule II stimulant remotely or in person. A remote first exam requires an in-person visit within 30 days. While the prescription continues, a visit or contact is required every three months. This must include an in-person visit at least once a year. Remote treatment must use live, two-way audio and video.
