Fewer pension delays for police and firefighters

Beginning November 13, 2025, New Jersey’s Police and Firemen’s Retirement System board cannot delay retirement or death benefits solely because a member is involved in a civil lawsuit. An exception applies when the lawsuit challenges a final board decision denying or adjusting benefits. The board keeps its power to pause benefits when a member faces criminal charges. It also keeps that power when a member was dismissed from public employment because of administrative charges. The board can adjust benefits based on the outcome of any legal proceeding involving the member.
