Shark fishing rules extended to 2029
The law takes effect immediately. It extends the DEC’s shark management power through December 31, 2029. DEC can set size, catch, and possession limits. It can set seasons and closed areas. It can require permits, gear rules, and recordkeeping. It can set rules for transport, possession, and sale. Rules must be at least as strict as current state law and must align with Atlantic States and federal fishery plans. For fishers and dealers, rules can restrict harvests and add paperwork, but they help protect shark populations.
