New York starts monarch protection plan

The law takes effect immediately. Within one year, the state environmental agency must start actions to protect monarch butterflies and their habitat. It must use the best science and can restore habitat on state lands and run education programs. It may partner with federal and state agencies, nonprofits, schools, and willing private landowners. The plan focuses on native milkweed and nectar plants and low-risk pest control. It also builds winter habitat and adds habitat in yards, non-cropped farmland, roadsides, and conservation easements.
